A Love Story Like No Other

As we get ready to leave the month of romance, I would be remiss not to mention the most worthy of love stories, the more epic of kisses.

I am, of course, talking about the Princess Bride.

The grandfather in the movie was not lying. The Princess Bride has everything! Romance! Swashbuckling heros! Sword fights! Pirates! Tests of skill and cunning! Revenge! Jealousy! And… TRUE LOVE!

For such a light hearted movie, it packs a punch. It’s delighted movie goers and book readers for ages and I weep at the thought of a generation that doesn’t know the Man In Black, Princess Buttercup, and their gang of fantastical characters.

In college we performed it in a classroom with our friends piled in on top of one another and not enough stage to move (where I dressed in PJs and played a sick child listening to this wonderous story for the first time). As an adult, a local theater put it on to share it with the next generation (where I was thrilled to don a 6-fingered glove and get to play with swords!). It’s a univeral story of adventure, hope, and love. How could anyone not want to read it, watch it, engage with it in any way they can?

The love story or Buttercup and Wesley was pivotal in my understanding of love (and story) as I was growing up.
