What better surprise could we have for May than finding out it's National Get Caught Reading Month!
If you don't know who that adorable guy in the photo is, let me set the scene. It's night, and a young, single mother has tucked her son into bed. As soon as the door is closed, our dear boy grabs his book, pulls out a flashlight, and jumps onto his stomach to start reading an epic adventure about treasure, daring escapes, and space pirates!
And just as it's getting to the best part, he hears his mother calling out his name as she opens the door and finds him reading instead of sleeping. His name follows an exasperated sigh. Not just his name, but his full name. Middle name included.
Boy, is he in trouble!
So, who else was just like that kid? I have to be honest. It wasn't me. Oh, I was a reader. And yes, I would read late into the night (and into the next morning). However, I didn't have to hide it from my mom because she was just as much a reader as I was. I had to get it from somewhere, right?
And I'll be honest, I'm the same way with my kids. Yes, I've walked past my daughter's room more than once over the years when she was supposedly asleep to find her light on. When I peeked in, she had her nose buried in a book.
So long as she was able to get up for school and wasn't a complete zombie the next day, I let her read. There are a lot worse habits in the world to instill in my children than reading too late :P
The only time I was really "caught reading" was in high school, and I know I've shared that story on my blog ( I Miss Silent Reading) before :P So, what is your best "caught reading" story?
Don't have one? Today seems like a good day to 'get caught' at it! So find a good book, get 'caught reading' and keep exploring!
